Okay, I'm writing to get some more insight on the secular ringtones. We did a panel discussion with 4 people a few months ago. We found that people have different perceptions of if it is right or wrong to have a secular music ringtone or voicemail greeting. I thought that this would be a good topic to do a survey on.
One thing that we all seemed to agree on is that music can really get into your spirit. You'll notice that when you're in the mall, you may automatically start to hum a tune that you hear being played via the speakers. You don't even realize that you're doing it!
I called someone on speakerphone one day, they had a secular voice greeting. When I went to church, this song was STILL in my mind. I had to pray it off of me. I was really disturbed by this.
Our discussion posed a few questions. I'd like to ask that you post your comments so that we can gain more insight as to why people use secular ringtones. Feel free to post any other questions that you feel might be beneficial to this survey. Also post resolutions. I'll compile them all and give you the results so that you can share it with your youth groups.
1. Is it appropriate to have a secular ringtone?
2. Does having a secular ringtone make us any different from the rest of the world?
3. What does having a secular ringtone say about our relationship with the Lord?
4. Do you have a secular ringtone/voice mail greeting?
5. If you do have one....if your pastor or church member were to call, would they be offended by what they heard?
6. Do you share Christ on your job? If so, if someone from your job called, and wanted to know more about Jesus, would your ringtone discourage them?
7. If having a ringtone is really important to you, why not have a CHRISTIAN ringtone?
8. Have we become too comfortable with the secular world?
9. What does a secular ringtone on our phones, say to the unsaved? Does this make us any different from the world?
